On July 29, the Thai Epidemic Control Center announced the latest epidemic situation. There were 17,669 new confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia and 165 new deaths, all of which set a single-day record.
It is reported that Thailand had the third wave of outbreaks in April this year. Due to the rapid spread of Delta virus, confirmed cases in Thailand have risen sharply since June. In recent days, the number of new confirmed cases per day has averaged more than 10,000, and new deaths have been added every day. There are often more than 100 cases.
In view of the continued spread of the third wave of the epidemic in the past three months, the Thai Ministry of Finance on the same day lowered the country’s economic growth forecast for this year from the previous growth of 2.3% to 1.3%.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said that Thailand’s current epidemic has affected the economic activity this year and the expected number of foreign tourists. It is estimated that only 300,000 foreign tourists will come to Thailand this year, which is far lower than the previous forecast of 2 million.
However, due to the still strong foreign trade exports and the government's fiscal stimulus measures, it will be able to prevent Thailand's economy from shrinking again this year after a 6.1% decline last year.
